Flowing water roused her back to consciousness. She had to blink away the sudden brightness of the sun. She felt refreshed, as if she had spent an entire night in her comfortable bed, back at the Prennenwood commune. At that moment, a great homesickness overcame her. Until that point in her journey, she had been too preoccupied with the soreness of riding, strange dreams, and the whole business of the chase, to really sit back and have time to think of what she had left behind.
And right now was no different, she told herself. She turned her head to try to determine where she was. To her right, she saw a wooden wall, curved inward. She continued to turn her head to look around and realized she was in a round room. She could discern no seams where the planks met. Even the ceiling appeared to be made of the same piece of wood. The walls were bare, save for a few bushes growing at their feet, in intricate silver pots. There was no door, only a curtain of golden silk draped over a section of the wall across the room from where she lay.
On the opposite side of the room, as far away from the bed as the drape was, stood a vanity made of exquisitely carved birch. Its mirror was oval and highly polished, with a silver border eloquently carved to resemble a wreath of leaves. A plush stool, silver as well, with legs carved like tree roots, sat in front of the small desk.
The only other piece of furniture in the room was the bed she now lay on. She pushed back the covers, made from the same golden silk as the curtain, embroidered with silver leaves and trees, and put her feet on the wooden floor. Her boots were gone, as were her clothes. She quickly glanced down at herself. The golden gown she was now wearing was so light that she had the impression she was not wearing anything at all.
She looked at the bed and marveled at its design. It seemed to be part of the floor. She could not tell where the bed ended and the floor began. The bed itself was as smooth as the silk sheets, and it was carved to resemble an enormous nest.
Against the wall, she finally noticed a small peg protruding into the room. On it hung an elegant silver dress. As she moved, the fabric seemed to change to a golden color. She took the sleeve with a tentative hand, not daring to touch it with more than her fingertips, lest she wrinkle the delicate fabric.
The curtain was suddenly pulled back, and an elfin maiden came in with a pitcher of water and a glass on a tray, along with a plate of little pastries. âNice to see you up and about, M'Lady,â said the young woman, with a twinkle in her voice.
âWhere are my clothes?â asked the druidess.
âThey were very travel worn, not to mention filthy, begging your pardon, M'Lady.
